Artisan 5-Quart

The KitchenAid KSM150PSOB Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer is a highly versatile, semi-industrial stand mixer.

Professional 6-Quart

The KP26M1XWH Professional 600 Series 6-Quart Stand Mixer is KitchenAid's most powerful Stand Mixer. It is a professional mixer, specifically tailored for serious, heavy-duty home baking.

Versatile use and extra attachments

The Artisan is very versatile, and has many additional attachments. The basic model comes with 3 attachments a flat beater, a wire whip and a dough hook. A pouring shield is also included with the bowl. Additional attachments are sold separately. These include attachments for making homemade pasta, stuff sausages, whip up ice cream, squeeze fruit, etc.
This mixer comes with professional wire whip, burnished flat beater, spiral dough hook, and a pouring shield with the bowl. It has a power hub for optional attachments, such as pasta maker, sausage stuffer, shredder, ice cream maker, etc. - but it is originally designed for serious home baking.

Low Cost

The Artisan mixer is quite reasonably priced.
The mixer costs about 30% more than the Artisan.

Quiet Operation

Regarded as a quiet mixer, even on the higher speed levels.
This model is a bit loud at higher speeds.

Special mixing features

The Artisan mixer uses a unique mixing action - the beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise. This entails moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl. The process, unique to the Artisan, creates a thorough blend of ingredients and eliminates the need to rotate the bowl.
This mixer has a burnished PowerKnead spiral hook, which replicates hand kneading with a forceful punching and rolling action. This allows the mixer to churn through double batches of bread dough. The unique planetary mixing action provides faster, more thorough blending of ingredients all the way to the edge of the bowl, without ever rotating it. The Soft Start mixing function helps minimize ingredient splatter and flour puff with gentle acceleration to the selected speed after start-up.

Ease of use

The Artisan Mixer is state of the art in that it is very easy to use, and is designed with the user in mind. It has a 10-speed slide control that ranges from a very fast whip to a very slow stir, and allows you to easily select the right speed for each mixing job. It has a unique mixing action - the beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise; moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl. This process, unique to the Artisan, creates a thorough blend of ingredients and eliminates the need to rotate the bowl. The stainless steel bowl has an ergonomic handle and a pouring shield that prevents ingredients from splashing out. The tilt-back mixer head provides easy access to the bowl and beaters. Sometimes the beaters need to be manually adjusted (with a beater adjustment screw at the bottom of the mixer) to allow the beater to mix everything at the bottom of the bowl. The bowl itself is easily locked- in and it is also very easy to attach, remove and clean the various attachments.
The mixer is quite easy for use, and has some nive features designed to make your life easier. It has 10 mixing speeds and a "Soft Start" mixing feature that helps minimize splatter of ingredients in the mixing bowl. The mixer is equipped with an electronic speed sensor which helps maintain a consistent mixing speed, even when adding ingredients. The mixer also has a commercial-style motor protection mechanism, shutting it off automatically when overload is detected. This design does not have a tilt-up head instead it uses a professional bowl-lift device that raises the bowl into the mixing position. This mechanism is rather heavy and may make it more difficult to take the beater or hook on and off.

Motor Quality

The Artisan mixer has a 325W motor, which is great for home-baking and cooking.
This mixer has a high-performance, pro-level motor of 575W, which can handle tough mixing jobs.

Design and Colors

The Artisan mixer sports an elegant finish, and is available in 24 colors. The bowl is polished stainless steel and has a comfort handle. The design is very appealing for showing off on your kitchen counter.
This mixer sports an elegant, satin pearl custom finish, and is available in 13 colors. The bowl is polished stainless steel and has a comfort handle. The mixer looks great on the countertop.

Suitable for large quantities

The Artisan mixer is equipped with a 325 watt motor. This motor is powerful and has the capacity to handle thick or large batches easily. While the Artisan mixer has a relatively small bowl of 5 quarts (4.8 litres), it is still able to yield 4.5 loaves of bread, 9 dozens of cookies or 7 pounds (3.2 kg) of mashed potatoes in one batch.
With a 6 quarts (5.7 liters) bowl and the special PowerKnead spiral hook, it has a Flour Power Rating of 14 cups of all-purpose flour per one batch. If you use high gluten, whole wheat or heavy grain flour, you can use much less, only 7-8 cups, in each batch. This means that it can mix enough dough for 8 loaves of bread (all-purpose flour) or 13 dozen cookies in a single bowl. It can also yield 8 pounds (3.6 kg) of mashed potatoes in one batch.

Kitchenaid Artisan

(Score 5/5)

Having used Kitchenaid products in the past, when the plastic stand on my lightweight Kitchenaid broke,it was too old to find a replacement, so I took a chance on the new 325 watt Artisan with the 5 quart bowl.

Because I bake MANY cookies for a ministry to the Kentucky Speedway Race Track fans, I make double batches when I can. It really pulls this mixer down when the dough gets stiff and the bowl is not quite big enough to handle some of these recipes. However, with all that said, I really do like the mixer. It is HEAVY so one does not have to worry it wandering around on the counter when doing a stiff dough. I like the way the beaters work. Looking forward to making something frothy with it.

A larger mixer would have been overkill for my household. My counter tops and backsplashes are white so I bought the white mixer. My husband said I should have bought the red one to bring attention to it. That's ok.

Great Gift for My GF

(Score 4/5)

Purchased this as a gift for my girlfriend and she loves it. The varying speeds work perfect for about any recipe. There are tons of attachments and ad-on's for this unit, and the price was great. If you look hard enough on amazon you'll find this model for about $70 cheaper than in the store. This allowed me to purchase a second mixing bowl made of glass with the money I saved. All in all a great purchase, and KicthenAid stuff always holds its value.

Wonderfull mixer!

(Score 4/5)

I am having so much fun with my new KitchenAid mixer! I haven't had a good working mixer for years and I am really enjoying having one again. It does a good job with all the tasks I've given it so far. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that this baby is HEAVY! I don't have space to leave it on my kitchen counter, so moving it out of the cupboard onto the counter can be a job.

I would never wish KitchenAid customer servic

(Score 2/5)

I received this mixer as a gift less than 2 weeks ago. It ran okay the first time I used it but that was short lived. While making a very light frosting the beater started to skip and hesitate. I noticed sparks coming from the inside of it as well as the smell of something electrical burning. After turning it off I called customer service and explained all of this to them in detail. They did not sound the least bit surprised by it. The woman on the phone had me convinced that I was crazy and told me "it's like a new pair of shoes, you just need to break it in. The machine isn't used to being ran". She told me to just let it run a while longer, I told her I was worried about doing that because of the sparking and the smell. Again, she made me feel crazy and told me all of their mixers do this. I for some reason believed her and went home to let it run with the results being the same. I call them back the following day and they asked if I could hold my phone up to the mixer so they could listen. Are you kidding me? I couldn't help but laugh at the request. My word wasn't good enough, you want to attempt to identify the problem by listening to it? I humored her and did so. Moments after hearing it she tells me that isn't a normal sound. Really? Thank you for assuring me that I am not crazy. I called because I knew it wasn't normal. I asked if she could identify the problem based on the sound and was told she couldn't. I can't help but think that's a lie because of the 3 times I called none of the reps sounded at all surprised by my problem. My new mixer is on its way but I can't say I am as excited for it. I only used this first one a couple times and already had problems, clearly the design is cheap and I fear it may happen again.

planetary shaft separated

(Score 1/5)

We make bread often - three times every two weeks; our usage of the machine is quite heavy, but not excessive, and we keep the kneading speed to 1 or 2. We bought the machine in 2007; soon enough, the "planetary" rotator descended from the rest of the unit. As this probably happened while the mixer was under warranty, we should have called KA, but didn't, and simply pushed the rotator up back against the machine. It worked for a while (6 months?), on condition one periodically pushed the rotator/agitator back into place. Eventually the rotator fell entirely off the vertical (ridged) shaft extending from the body of the machine: I wrapped the base of the shaft with nylon tape (as used in plumbing), and pushed the rotator back into place. That worked for a while, although I did have to replaced the nylon tape every now and then. Eventually that 'fix' stopped being sufficient. It's been in the garage for a while - we've been kneading by hand - really, not much more work than doing it by machine - but today, I got around to wrapping the shaft with duct tape: it looks like this might hold for a while.

There are many negative reviews dealing with the plastic/metal gears issue, but not so many dealing with this (although I've seen at least one), so one might conclude that we were simply unlucky. On the other hand, what odd engineering: there is nothing to hold the rotator to the shaft, except friction, unless there was a part that fell into one of our breads, and we ate it without noticing. I think not - how can this design ever work?
